COMMIT TO MAKING IT WORK

Marriage is an institution that was ordained by God in the garden of Eden. God intended that man should leave his parents and get united with his wife and the two become one flesh. God declared that let no man separate what He has put together. This meant that marriage was meant to work and make no room for divorce. Commit to making it work.

One of the greatest virtues that should be exercised in marriage is commitment. Commitment is the quality of being dedicated to a cause. That when two find themselves joined by the institution of marriage, they should work to make sure that they continue living together till death do set them apart.

But does that mean that there will be no conditions in marriage that will create a room for separation? Of cause not, marriage has its own ups and down and that is why commitment comes in to ensure that the promises that the two made before marriage are being kept. There should be nothing like,” I don’t feel like loving him/her anymore.”

A Personal Decision

Commitment in marriage is more than reciting the marriage vows during the marriage ceremony. It is making a personal decision that no matter what each party in the marriage is committed to make the marriage work. There are signs in marriage that will show that the marriage partners are committed in making the marriage work. These are some of the signs that will show commitment in marriage.

Commit to making it work. First of all, a committed marriage is operated with unconditional love, because love is the perfect bond of unity. Paul compares the type of love the husband should give to his wife to the one Jesus Christ gave to the church. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, (Ephesians 5:25-26)

The kind of love that Christ showed the church is unconditional. It didn’t depend on our behaviour and no one qualified to be loved by Christ as the scripture says that all had sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23). But despise the fallen condition the scripture says that; But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8).

Love Should Keep on Burning

Commitment in marriage will not demand the other party to qualify for the love. Nor will the level of love be proportional with what either of the spouse has done or not. Even in the midst of shortcomings and challenges the candle of love should keep on burning. When this happens just as the scripture says that love covers a multitude of sins. And everyone will try to accommodate one another with their weakness.

Another way of showing commitment in marriage is being loyal. This can be seen by the use of the terms; “my husband and I, my wife and I” or the term “we” when speaking. This clearly shows that one is part and parcel of the marriage and also committed to one another. This will eventually show respect and appreciation to one another. And such behaviour will build better communication and respect for one another.
